Welcome to “E Week”!

MY FOLLOW-UP COMMENTS ARE IN BOLD IN THE MARGINS.  (THIS DOES NOT MEAN I’M shouting.  I’m not.)
Friends!  WELCOME TO “E WEEK!”  THAT STANDS FOR “ELIMINATION WEEK.”
BY THE END OF SATURDAY, 54 FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY WILL HAVE LAPTOPS AND WIRELESS ACCESS IN THEIR HOMES FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.  STUDENTS’ AND THEIR PARENTS’ WORLDS ARE GOING TO OPEN UP TO NEW HORIZONS.  SO MUCH OF THIS IS DUE TO YOU!

The “Reality Piece” is getting ready to take over from “creation-design-imagine” for E2D soon.

We have 9 (!) Davidson College students coming to campus a few days early to begin the process of implementing the distribution of the first laptops to, largely, Davidson Elementary School families during the 8/22-24 timeframe.

I know I speak for Kathryn Kemp, when I tell you that we are all super excited because this is what we’ve all be working hard to realize for our local neighbors.

What can you do here in the next little bit?  Some ideas:

* Don’t forget that our “Press Event” to honor and celebrate Lowe’s’ amazing gift is Wednesday, 21 August at 11:30am at Ada.  It would be great to have an overflowing crowd to celebrate together.  You all have done so much, so I think it would be great for you to enjoy as well.

PRESS CONFERENCE IS STILL ON FOR WEDNESDAY AT 11:30AM AND SHOULD BE FANTASTIC!  COME JOIN IF YOU CAN.  BRING YOUR KIDS TOO, IF YOU’D LIKE.  GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THE CIVIC VALUES MESSAGE WITH THEM.

* We would like to welcome our 9 students with “Welcome Back to School” baskets.  We are hoping to pack baskets for each of them that have granola bars, candy, cookies, Summit cards, notes from your children…just about anything, to make them know how much we appreciate their sacrificing their last few days of summer to help our families.

MANY THANKS TO AMY HOLTHOUSER AND THE DAVIDSON ROTARY CLUB (AGAIN!) FOR TAKING THE LEAD IN PREPARING THESE BASKETS.

* From Thursday-Saturday, August 22-24, these 9 students, in conjunction with 9 adult volunteers from the community will be going into 50+ homes to distribute the laptops, making sure the wiring is working and then sitting down with the families to help teach them basic computer skills.

WE ARE (GULP!) A COUPLE OF ADULT CIVILIANS SHORT FOR THIS DUTY RIGHT NOW.  THIS IS MY BIGGEST, BIGGEST, BIGGEST ASK OF THE WEEK: IF ANY OF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW CAN POSSIBLY SERVE IN THE ROLE OF AN ADULT VOLUNTEER, YOU’LL BE SAVING OUR BACON.

A VOLUNTEER DOES NOT NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT COMPUTERS.  THE ADULTS ARE NEEDED MORE AS “CHAPERONES” AND “HELPERS” FOR THE DAVIDSON STUDENTS.

WE NEED ADULT VOLUNTEERS FROM 10:15AM TO 5:30PM OR SO ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY FROM 9AM TO NOON OR SO.

I GUARANTEE THAT IF YOU TAKE ONE OF THESE ROLES THAT YOU WILL FIND IT EYE-OPENING, INSPIRING AND MOTIVATIONAL.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW CAN VOLUNTEER, PLEASE CALL ME ASAP AT 704-904-4098.

I WILL DO SOMETHING INCREDIBLY NICE FOR YOU IN RETURN.  POSSIBLY GET YOU A FRUITCAKE…OR NOT GET YOU A FRUITCAKE, DEPENDING UPON YOUR PREFERENCE.  🙂

* We are hoping that we may be using some facility near campus (possibly a small part of the Congregation House) as a staging area…for our students to come and hang out in the air conditioning between calls…y’all could help us by grabbing a gatorade and/or a power bar to keep their blood sugar high.  Could you possibly help keep us stocked with cold drinks and munchies?

WE HAVE SECURED THE DCPC CONGREGATION HOUSE FOR THURSDAY-SATURDAY.  THOSE PRESBYTERIANS ARE SOOOO RELIABLY HELPFUL!  I STILL DON’T HAVE DRINKS OR SNACKS FIGURED OUT YET, BUT THAT IS SOMETHING I CAN EASILY DO.

* We definitely don’t have a lunch solution yet for any of the days.  We will all be together on Thursday…and then will be running around in 9 different groups on Friday and Saturday.
– It would be amazing if a couple of folks might be willing to make some lunch for these folks on Thursday.
– For Friday and Saturday, I’m thinking that since folks will be on the fly, we will arrange for some bagged lunches so they can stay on the go.
– Any ideas to help support this would be greatly appreciated.

BIG THANKS TO CATHERINE AND ALICE BRAGG FOR MAKING OUR LUNCH ON THURSDAY.

* On Thursday evening at Summit Coffee, we will be “thanking” and celebrating our Davidson students for their generosity with tapas and an open tab at Summit from 7-9.  Summit has the drinks down, but help with making, procuring, serving some munchies that evening would be most appreciated.  Your attendance would be fantastic as well.

OUR STUDENTS WILL BE DINING ON A WONDERFUL MEAL OF ZITI, SALAD AND GARLIC BREAD AT SUMMIT  AFTER AN INVIGORATING DAY OF SERVICE TO E2D. IF YOU CAN JOIN US AND BRING EITHER AN APPETIZER OR A PLATE OF COOKIES/BROWNIES, ETC., THAT WOULD BE GREAT!  IF YOU FEEL YOU CAN DO THIS, PLEASE EMAIL MY WIFE, EILEEN, AT eikeeley@davidson.edu.

* On Saturday from 9-11, a couple of young DElem girls are hosting a used childrens’ book drive over in front of Main Street books, with all the proceeds going to E2D.  It would be great if you could support them by either donating some books and/or buying some books from them for your children, grandchildren or as a gift for someone else.  (Info cut and pasted below.)

I think that’s it for now.

Many thanks for your kind support along the way.

AGAIN, MANY, MANY THANKS.  PLEASE CONSIDER THE BOLD TYPE REQUEST ABOVE.  I NEED SOME HELP ON THIS BADLY!

Y’ALL ARE THE BEST!
